Brilliant Club – Scholars Programme
A group of Year 9 students have participated in a project called the Scholars Programme run by the Brilliant Club, a charity set up to increase the number of students from different backgrounds progressing to highly-selective universities. The Scholars Programme was delivered in the autumn term by a PhD tutor from the University of Bath and the students studied a ‘supra-curricular’ topic related to the PhD tutor’s area of expertise.
The programme running this year was on the area of health inequalities in sport. A group of 14 students were selected for the programme. As part of the programme the students had to complete a university style essay of 2000 words. This was a challenge for some students and they felt a huge sense of achievement when they completed the essay as they had never written such a long piece of work before. This developed their skills of independent learning and time management.
The students were able to graduate from the programme during a trip to Bath University. The day included a tour of the university as well as a talk from current university students and a reflection of the skills learned during the programme. The students asked lots of questions and really enjoyed seeing what the university had to offer.“Brilliant Club opens up lots of opportunities and helps inspire young people to achieve more” - Cassia
It was lovely to celebrate the students’ achievements. Every student made progress in their writing and thinking skills over the programme and all students passed the final assignment with 6 students achieving a 2:1.
Well done to all the students on the completion of the Scholars Programme!
‘It gave me an opportunity to see what a university is like and what I could look forward to in the future.” - Aaliyah
Extra special mention to Summer!
Every year the Brilliant Club produce an academic journal designed to recognise and showcase the outstanding work completed across the UK during the Scholars Programme by sharing some of the academic assignments produced. We are pleased to announce that the assignment written by Summer in Year 10 has been selected for publication in the journal. We are so proud of the hard work Summer put in to writing her assignment. It was a challenge but she persevered showing great resilience in tackling the difficult subject. Well done Summer!
