Haygrove Students Embrace Culture and Learning on China Exchange Trip

Students from Haygrove school recently returned from an enriching and unforgettable three-week cultural immersion trip to China. The experience offered a unique opportunity to live and learn in a new environment, and the students embraced every moment with enthusiasm, resilience, and curiosity.

During their time abroad, students explored some of Shanghai’s most iconic landmarks, including the Bund and the TV Tower, where they enjoyed breathtaking views of the city's skyline. Academic life was equally vibrant, with students participating in daily Chinese language lessons and celebrating their achievements during a competitive Sports Day.

Highlights included a visit to the picturesque ancient water town of Wuzhen complete with a scenic boat ride, shopping trips to local malls, and taking part in an International Community Day.

Evenings were filled with hands-on cultural activities, from traditional tea ceremonies and flower arranging to dumpling making, arts and crafts, and the creation of tanghulu (candied fruit skewers). Students also enjoyed recreational time with sports, pool tournaments, movie nights and some enthusiastic karaoke sessions.

“It was a wonderful trip for our students - an unforgettable opportunity to attend a school in a different country and immerse themselves in both the culture and daily life,” said Taytum Cotton, teacher at Haygrove and trip leader. “They challenged themselves, built new friendships and created memories that will last a lifetime.”

“Going to China was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I loved all aspects of the trip. One of my favourite parts of the trip was going to the local high school. I loved meeting the students there and they were welcoming and kind to all of us. One of the things that I think people need to try is the food – it is extremely delicious!” Phoebe, Haygrove Student

Mr. Reid, Headteacher at Haygrove School, added, “It’s fantastic to have this growing partnership with the Yew Wah Foundation. Opportunities like this are a important part of what we do at Haygrove. Our students can become global citizens who aren’t afraid to step into the world, experience new cultures, and think beyond borders. We have already welcomed Chinese students to our school this term and know some of our younger students are really looking forward to their chance to go to China.”
