Theatre Trip to Oliver Twist

On the 18th January our GCSE Drama cohort went to the Tobacco Factory Theatre in Bristol to watch an adaptation of Oliver Twist. The production combined live music, quick costume changes, song, ensemble work and impressive multi-rolling to retell the well-known tale.

The audience sat in the round excitedly anticipating the performance and it did not disappoint. The students were quickly roaring with laughter as the performers broke the fourth-wall including the character Dodger offering a Jammy Dodger to one of our Year 11s.

During the interval a Year 10 described the performance as 'best thing they had ever seen.' The second half was a rollercoaster of emotions, with students particularly warming to the character Martha - played by the male actor who also played Dodger. They thought the actor was fantastic and were thrilled to meet him after the show.

The students were very respectful during the performance and their curiosity and passion for the performance poured out as they recalled moments all the way home. Watching this performance will inspire their practical work to help them be more creative and confident with their ideas. It is also part of the GCSE course to watch and evaluate live theatre. Lessons this term will include reliving moments of the performance as we analyse the play further in preparation for summer exams.
