Year 10 Inspired by Leading Scientists at GCSE Science Live!

Year 10 enjoyed an exceptional and informative day at The Forum in Bath, where they had the rare chance to hear directly from some of the UK’s most respected and well‑known scientists. The event brought science to life, giving students a glimpse into cutting‑edge research and the real people behind it.

The day opened with Professor Sophie Scott, who explored the science of laughter—why we laugh, how our brains respond, and what laughter reveals about human communication. Her talk was both fascinating and genuinely funny, setting a brilliant tone for the rest of the event.

Dr Anna Ploszajski followed with an engaging and personal story about how she accidentally became a materials scientist. Her journey showed students that career paths aren’t always straightforward, and that curiosity can lead to unexpected and exciting places.

Dr Robert Winston sttod on stage at GCSE Science Live presenting to students

A major highlight for many was hearing Professor Robert Winston, one of the country’s best‑known science communicators. His lecture on reproductive biology was thought‑provoking, insightful, and delivered with the warmth and clarity he is famous for.

Students were then introduced to the world of quantum physics by Dr Jessica Wade, whose enthusiasm and explanations helped demystify one of science’s most complex fields.

The programme continued with Dr Tim Gabriel, who spoke about nanotechnology and advanced materials, showing how tiny structures can have enormous impacts on medicine, engineering, and everyday life.

To support students in their own studies, an experienced examiner added to the day with practical advice on how to approach GCSE science questions and secure top marks. These tips were eagerly noted and will no doubt prove invaluable in the months ahead.

Overall, it was a fantastic and inspiring day!
