Yew Wah Chinese Partnership

Our link with Yew Wah International Education Foundation, established in 2007, continues to go from strength to strength.

We are fortunate to connect with students and staff from a number campuses in China, with plans to expand to other schools and to accommodate greater numbers with each visit. Each group visits Haygrove School for three days as part of their three week stay in Somerset, and our students act as ‘buddies’ to enable the groups to explore teaching and learning in a Western environment.

The collaborative work is a valuable opportunity for our students to develop key character traits such as confidence and curiosity as they interact with students from a culturally diverse background.

As an additional offer, unique to Haygrove, we also offer all students an opportunity to spend a day at Somerset Cultural Centre, Knowle Hall. This building, located just off J23, is the residential centre for our Chinese guests and our students receive a day of enrichment working in partnership with visiting students from China. Activities such as Gardening, Art, Environmental Science and Space detectives allow the 2 groups of students to work together to share learning and interact on a 1-1 level to explore cultural ideas and enjoy learning beyond the curriculum. There is a clear focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and both groups of students enjoy the opportunity to share ideas and experiences.

All of the visits are free to Haygrove students and we are very grateful for the generosity of Yew Wah.

We have also been fortunate to send our students to China! Our most recent visit saw 18 students and 2 staff travel to Tongxiang to a school which is brand new and boasts 21st century facilities and a broad curriculum. The 3 week visit saw our students take part in a singing visit to a local mall, International Day, Sports Day and lessons with their Chinese counterparts as well as cultural visits to local places of interest such as Wuzhen Water town. We look forward to planning future visits working with Yew Wah!
